'Cats to Face Illini in Round One
Tuesday, February 28, 2006
Northwestern
and Illinois will renew their rivalry for the third time this season in
the first round of the Big Ten Tournament this Thursday in
Indianapolis. The 'Cats have lost twice to the Down-staters this season
by a total margin of 10 points, including a one point defeat in
Evanston two weeks ago. WNUR Sports will have the 'Cats entire Big Ten
Tourney run live on WNUR. Stay Tuned!
NU Gets Flat, Blowout on the Road,
Sputters to End of Regular Season.
Sunday, February 26, 2006
Northwestern
faced two tough opponents on the road to end their conference regular
season and fell to both of them, but in two very different ways. On
Thursday (2/23) the 'Cats lost a hard-fought, gritty game to the Penn
State Nittany Lions 72-64. Ifeoma Okonkwo scored 27 points to lead all
scorers.
Three days later a much different NU squad took the floor at Minnesota
and scored just 6 more points total than Okonkwo's output on Thursday.
Sunday (2/26) the Wildcats were dominated by the nations's 21st ranked
team, 71-33. Ifeoma scored just 12 points in the loss.
NU Drops Last Home Tilt by One
Thursday, February 16, 2006
Northwestern
had the opportunity to send lone senior Ifeoma Okonkwo, the team's
unquestioned leader and leading scorer, off with a win in her final
home game at Welsh-Ryan Arena. But a foul on a game-tying shot attempt
with 2.6 seconds left gave Illinois a free throw to win it, and the
Illini hit it, spoiling Okonkwo's party, 60-59. Okonkwo had 23 points,
in typical fashion attempting to will her team to victory, but it
wasn't enough.
Northwestern finishes the Big Ten campaign on
the road, beginning Thursday at Penn State. You can stay in touch with
Okonkwo's final wo regular season games right here at sports.wnur.org.
WNUR will have all the action live on the air and over the world wide web.
NU Goes 1-2 in Frantic Week
Sunday, February 12, 2006
Northwestern
beat Wisconsin at home for their second Big-Ten win this season to
start a tough week of conference play, but then fell twice on the road,
at Iowa and at Indiana Thursday(2/9) and Sunday (2/12).
Ifeoma Okonkwo scored her 1000th point as a Wildcat in the win against
Wisconsin, which came down to an exciting finish in which the 'Cats
defense stymied two desperation attempts by the Badgers and A.J.
Glasauer hit a free throw to seal the win, 58-56.
The 'Cats dropped the other two contests by double-digits, but hung
tough against the top-tier Hawkeyes, who blew out the 'Cats at
Welsh-Ryan earlier this season. Both Okonkwo and freshman Kristin
Cartwright had double-doubles in the contest.
The 'Cats next face Illinois at Welsh-Ryan Arena Thursday night, with
WNUR, like always, bringing you the exclusive play by play.
NU Comes up Short at #11
Boilers.
Sunday, January 29, 2006
A.J.
Glasauer chipped in a season high 26 points as the Wildcats gave Big
Ten leader Purdue a scare on their home court before finally succumbing
to the 11th ranked Boilermakers 71-63. Northwestern is the only Big Ten
team to score 60 points against Purdue this season, and only the 3rd
team overall, joining Western Michigan and Depaul.
NU next takes on #17 Michigan State in Evanston Thursday (2/2) night.
Of course, all the coverage you could ever need, including exclusive
play by play, is available right here at sports.wnur.org, and on the
air at WNUR Sports, 89.3 FM Evanston-Chicago.
NU Crushes Michigan in
Ann Arbor.
Thursday, January 26, 2006
NU finally played a complete basketball
game Thursday night, doing it on the road no less, en route to a 20
point demolition of Michigan. The 'Cats used 29 points from Ifeoma
Okonkwo, including 13-14 from the foul line, to beat the Wolverines
77-57. It was the 'Cats first victory of the Big Ten season, and first
win since December 22. Northwestern improved to 5-14 overall, and 1-7
in conference action. Michigan is now alone in last place in the
conference, at 0-8.
Northwestern takes on the nation's 11th ranked team in the Purdue
Boilermakers on Sunday, January 29th, in West Lafayette. WNUR Sports
will have all the action for you live on 89.3 FM and right here at
sports.wnur.org.
PSU Dominates 'Cats at
W-R.
Sunday, January 22, 2006
NU
was held more than 16 minutes without a field goal for a stretch in the
first half, and Penn State raced away to a 91-48 win in Evanston
Sunday. Northwestern has now lost 9 in a row, including all 7 Big Ten
contests. Nothing went right for Northwestern against a Nittany Lion
team that had been struggling, coming into the game at 2-5 in the Big
Ten.
Northwestern next faces Michigan, also 0-7 in the conference, in Ann
Arbor Thursday night. That game, like every Wildcat Women's Big Ten
tilt, can be heard on WNUR 89.3 FM and right here at sports.wnur.org.
Tip-off is at 6 pm Central Time, the pre-game starts at 5:40.
55 Points in Second Half
Enough for UW-Milwaukee, 'Cats lose 81-73.
Thursday, January 19, 2006
NU
played solid defense for about 25 minutes Wednesday night, but college
basketball games are 40 minutes long, and the UW-Milwaukee Panthers
kept up the offense for the full 40. Northwestern had one of its best
offensive games of the season, getting 23 points from A.J. Glasauer and
21 from Ifeoma Okonkwo. Okonkwo also had 11 rebounds to record her
6th double-double of the season. but it wasn't enough, as the 'Cats
allowed UW-M to shoot 67% from the field in the second half.
NU dropped its 8th consecutive game, and have yet to win in 2006. Now
4-13, NU faces two tough challenges at home in the Big Ten, starting
with Penn State on Sunday, before hitting the road again.
'Cats Come Up Short
Against Illini
Sunday, January 8, 2006
NU
rebounded from the Ohio State whupping with a solid effort against
Illinois Sunday, but came up 10 points shy of their first Big Ten win.
Northwestern drops to 4-10 overall with the 64-55 loss in Champaign.
Once again the 'Cats got stellar contributions from senior Ifeoma
Okonkwo and freshman Kristin Cartwright. Cartwright scored a career
high 13 points. The Wildcats are back in action, listen on WNUR
Sports, Thursday night in Evanston against Indiana.
'Cats Routed by #10 Ohio
State
Thursday, January 5, 2006
The
Buckeyes had four players in double figures, including the Big Ten's
reigning player of the year, Jessica Davenport, and it was simply too
much for NU, who dropped to 0-3 in the Big Ten with the 82-54 loss.
Northwestern next takes on Illinois in Champaign Sunday, and, like
every one of NU's Big Ten contests, WNUR Sports will be on the call.
The lllini have
started the season 9-4, including a victory over #15 Oklahoma at
Assembly Hall. NU faces another tough test trying to get their first
win in conference play.

The Wildcats came out ready to play in the
first half, but the start of the second half was another matter
entirely Thursday night in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Seventh seeded Illinois went on a 12-0 run to start the half,
stretching their lead to 16 points, and they never looked back, winning
66-43.
Sarah Kwasinski, in her final game as the Wildcat center, grabbed 7
rebounds moving her into tenth all time in NU history. Kwaz added 14
points to lead the 'Cats in scoring too.
Still Streaking... Eight
Losses in a Row for Wildcat Women
Wednesday,
February 23, 2005
Northwestern made a late game run against
the Badgers but came up
short in their last road
game of the season. A three pointer with less
than two minutes left by Wisconsin's Jolene Anderson ended the 'Cats
17-1 rally and gave Anderson 28 points for the game.
Ifeoma Okonkwo had 14 to lead the 'Cats, who shot a better percentage
from the field
and turned the ball over less than the Badgers. But the 'Cats hit just
2-14 three-point shots while the Badgers knocked down 8-21.
The 'Cats come back from the trip with a 5-23
record (2-13 Big Ten) and
finish up the regular season with Senior Day at Welsh-Ryan Sunday
against Minnesota.
WNUR
Sports will be on hand to bring you the action
and with great fan giveaways and promotions.
