Here begins our rollout of coverage of Big Ears Festival, which went down last weekend in Knoxville, TN. First up, we have an interview with Chicago’s own Glenn Kotche, who you might know as the drummer from Wilco. Kotche is a man of many hats – a percussionist and a composer. Check out his new album, Adventureland, which was released on Cantaloupe Music on March 25.

Cloud at Building 16 (Providence)

Hello friends!  We are very excited to be having Cloud Becomes Your Hand perform in our studio this coming Thursday, April 3rd.  Check them out locally via 89.3FM or worldwide right here on wnur.org at 6pm!  They just released “Rocks or Cakes” this February, their first record on Northern Spy.  They’ll be playing in Chicago on Friday, April 4th at 9pm at Situations at 2202 N. Milwaukee Ave. Here’s what they have to say about them:

The spirit of discovery has made heroes of mountain climbers and deep sea divers. We rally around it with undaunted belief that one day aliens will be our best friends, if we can just push deep enough into space. Cloud Becomes Your Hand reminds us that this magic of new worlds isn’t just on the edges of civilization; it is all around us. Like a children’s show on PBS, depicting urban life with a frenetic jazz of togetherness and purpose, theirs is the sound of exploring your own city. It is the sound of meeting all the surprising people around you. Surrealism, Dada, psychedelia; these are just fancy words to describe the simple thing this group has done. They’ve collected a bunch of exciting sounds and tied them together with the exclamation, “We’re all here, living these wild lives with each other!”  It is a sentiment explaining the joy and wonder in a child’s eyes. A sentiment Cloud Becomes Your Hand reminds us is for everyone, forever.

Everyone here at WNUR wants to extend a big big thanks to all of our listeners, especially those who were able to contribute during the 2014 Phoneathon fundraiser that we’ve just wrapped up. It’s a time of year when we’re able to speak with listeners worldwide and offer them premiums our friends are nice enough to provide. It’d be impossible to make an exhaustive list but I know just this year Atavistic, Delmark, Southport, Merge, and the Secretly Label Group all provided premiums for us to offer donors.  It’s tedious for us to solicit donations while on-air, but the whole Phoneathon project brings the station together like no other event, and besides it is absolutely necessary given our budget constraints.

It’s unclear as of now whether or not we hit our goal of $30,000 because online donations still need to process but we’re going to be close. So once again, thanks for keeping Chicago’s Sound Experiment alive, and cheers to another great year!

Of course you can always donate to WNUR here: https://www.give-northwestern.org/donate

We just won’t bring it up on-air until next year.
