08/31/05 |
Daniel
Godston, Jayve Montgomery, and Joel Wanek return for their second
performance on Eric Ricks' jazz show. Godston plays trumpet,
Montgomery is on drums, Wanek is on bass and they're all playing small
percussion. Just by listening you might not realize just how many
instruments are being used. Lots of cool homemade and unusual
percussion. |

Rempis/ McBride/ Adasiewicz |
04/13/05 |
A
brilliant set of compositions and improvisations from this Chicago trio
that was first aired on Eric Ricks' jazz show. The group, which
later took on the name Wheelhouse, features Dave Rempis on saxophones, Nate
McBride on bass, and Jason Adasiewicz on vibes. The recording
came out particularly well and this performance is definitely one you
should check out. |

You
could try to call this reggae-klesmer-punk-ska-jazz-rock . . . but
don't. It's New York band Gutbucket.
This set is one
explosive tune right after another. It features Paul Chuffo
(drums), Ty Citerman (guitar), Eric Rockwin (bass), and Ken
Thomson (saxophone). Their most recent CD, "Dry Humping the
American Dream" is available from Cantaloupe Music. |

This
was a brand new quartet when they came in to play one chilly morning in
January. Ken Vandermark
is here playing reeds and Jason Stein on bass
clarinet. Nate Mcbride (bass) and Tim Daisy (drums) complete the
lineup. All of them contribute compositions. A very nice
set and a very cool group. Take a listen. Note
that the tunes they play are listed below. WNUR's Dave Badger was
the
recording engineer. 1. Atlas (Daisy) (8:03) 2. Veruit (McBride) (6:04) 3. 29 Miles of Black Snow (Vandermark) (8:33) 4. Superleggera (McBride) (5:59) 5. Concentration (Stein) (6:16) 6. Shatter (Vandermark) (7:14) |

Peter
Brotzmann |
04/20/01 |
Legendary
German saxophonist Peter Brotzmann visited the WNUR studios and was
interviewed by Ken Vandermark
(a member of the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet and also a WNUR
dj). Lots of great history uncovered in this interview.
Learn about Brotzmann before he was a musician and how it all got
started. Highly entertaining (and you might learn something
too...) Atavistic and Okkadisk both offer Brotzmann
titles that you should check out. |

Evan
Parker |
11/14/95 |
Legendary
British saxophonist Evan Parker joined WNUR dj Seth Tisue for a phone interview.
Parker's comments become rather profound at times. Take a listen
and learn from the master himself. Currently, Evan Parker runs
the label Psi with
titles from him and a variety of other great improvisers. |
