NEWS
- WNUR will soon be broadcasting worldwide over the Internet via
RealAudio technology. The official launch date is May 22nd, but the
signal is available now on a test basis -- if you're interested in
trying it out early, contact us for the URL.
- So far we have two special broadcasts planned in association with the
Empty Bottle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music, May 8-10 (see
http://www.emptybottle.com/feature/98jzinfo.html for background
on the performers, but trust http://www.cs.nwu.edu/~tisue/chicagonow/
for up-to-date schedule info):
- Friday, May 1st, 11:00am
-
Live interview with Empty Bottle Festival of Jazz and Improvised
Music organizers Ken Vandermark and John Corbett, discussing the
music of Joe Harriott, the late British (Jamaican expatriate)
saxophonist and composer whose explorations in "free form" jazz
paralleled simultaneous independent developments in the United
States. On the opening night of the festival, Vandermark will
lead a group presenting exclusively Harriott compositions.

- Wednesday, May 6th, 11:00am
- Live performance by the Chicago duo of Jim Baker (synthesizers)
and Michael Zerang (percussion), two veteran improvisors who
have been instrumental as far back as in the early 1980's
in laying the groundwork for the flowering of improvised music in
Chicago in the last few years. Tune in for a preview of the
telepathic, panidiomatic improvisations they'll present at the
festival on Saturday night.
- We were pleased to present a live interview last week with New York
pianist Michael Weiss, who was in town for his yearly appearance at
the Jazz Showcase with the Johnny Griffin Quartet. Weiss also led a
trio at the Jazz Record Mart in a concert celebrating the release of
his brand new CD out on the DIW label by his own quartet featuring
ex-Chicago tenor player Eric Alexander.
- We'll be sending out the results of our "Best of 1997" poll shortly.
