[New releases]

- Ethnic Heritage Ensemble: 21st Century Union March (Silkheart)
Studio session by Chicago/AACM trio led by Kahil El'Zabar
(percussion), with Ed Wilkerson (reeds), Joseph Bowie (trombone).
- William Hooker & Billy Bang: Joy (Within)! (Silkheart)
Live 1995 drum/violin duets at the old Knitting Factory right
before they moved.
- Tim Berne/Paraphrase: Visitation Rites (Screwgun)
Trio with Tom Rainey and Drew Gress.
- Tim Berne/Bloodcount: Discretion (Screwgun)
Quartet lineup live from their 1997 tour. Samples of Berne
abusing the audience at the Elbo Room in Chicago are unfortunately not
included.
- Spontaneous Music Ensemble: Withdrawal (1966-7) (Emanem)
Earliest in-print recordings of John Stevens' SME, catching them
in a transitional stage between free jazz and the free improv they
were about to pioneer. With Stevens, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Rutherford,
Trevor Watts, Derek Bailey, Barry Guy, and Evan Parker. Perhaps
mostly for those with a special interest in the birth of English
free music.
- Paul Rutherford: Sequences 72 & 73 (Emanem)
Previously unissued; trombonist Rutherford here conducts a large
ensemble of English improvisors.

- Paul Rutherford: The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie (Emanem)
"This is still the best record of solo free improvising you
are likely to find." (Derek Bailey, 1987)
