GENERAL COMMENTS
- Seth Tisue will be away during the month of August. Jim Zanghi
will be handling music director duties during this time. As always,
you can reach us both at jazz-md@wnur.org.
- John Corbett will be interviewing Hat Art producer Werner X.
Uehlinger as part of a Hat Art interiew series presented by WNUR.
This will happen Tuesday morning, August 27, 1996, during John's show
(9:30 am - 12:30pm).
NEW MUSIC COMMENTS
- Ornette! Sound Museum consists of a quartet led by Ornette
Coleman with Charnette Moffett, Denardo Coleman, and Geri Allen. I've
heard that this is the first time Ornette has worked with a piano
player since the '60's. The 2 CD's have their own album titles and
are packaged separately, but consist of the same 14 compositions, with
a completely different rendition of each composition on the different
CD's. Sounds like a marketing gimic by Verve, and maybe it is, but I
tried playing both renditions of one composition at the exact same
time using two CD players and what I heard was a mess - it was amazing
how different they really were. Overall, a great pair of CD's.
- Cyrus Chestnut's release on Evidence is a nice 2 CD set.
- What We Live has their second album out, this time on Black
Saint. The first one on DIW is still getting heavy airplay on our
station. The new release has a different fourth guest artist
appearing on each of the album's tracks.
- You Forget to Answer is new improvised music from
Maya Recordings featuring Barry Guy, Mats Gustafsson, and Raymond
Strid. The latter two Swedish improvisors recently visited Chicago,
and Mats will return to his home-away-from-home this fall. Hopefully,
John Corbett will have him on the air again. Maya is run by Barry Guy
and Maya Homburger. After Sept. 20, they will have a new address as
they are moving to Ireland. I don't have the new contact info with
me, but you can probably check Peter Stubley's European Improvised
Music web site for an update.
- Unlike most of the new Emanem releases, Russell/Turner CD below
was recorded recently (earlier this year).
- Hal Rammel, John Corbett, and Terri Kapsalis performed this
Friday at the Lunar Cabaret to celebrate the release of their new CD.
- Samana is the first all-female band to come out of the AACM
school.
