NEW MUSIC COMMENTS
- An extremely welcome new reissue is John Zorn's The
Classic Guide to Strategy, two albums of deliriously extremist
non-idiomatic improvisations for solo saxophone (and clarinet, and
duck calls...).
- The new CD by trumpeter Dave Douglas (known for his work with
Masada and his own Tiny Bell Trio) has the unusual lineup of trumpet,
drums, and three string players (violin, cello, bass). There are
covers of Monk and Kirk as well as originals dedicated to Wayne
Shorter, Mark Dresser, Steve Lacy, John Cage, John Zorn, and Woody
Shaw, a list of names that indicates the breadth of Douglas's
interests.
- Swiss/Italian percussionist Ivano Torre's new disc on Unit
features the unusual combination of accordion, tuba, and baritone sax
and reflects an interest in circus and march music as well as jazz.
- Revealing was James Ulmer's first album as a
leader, originally released back in 1977. It features saxophonist
George Adams.
- Into the Woods is a best-of compilation by
altoist Phil Woods.
