GENERAL COMMENTS
- An interview with pianist Myra Melford will be broadcast this
Thursday morning at 8:30 am.
- The 11:00 break is a long-standing tradition on WNUR Jazz. DJ's
use the "breaks" to feature in-depth a particular artist, instrument,
label, or theme. Topics of last week's 11:00 breaks included Paul
Dunmall (English saxophonist, member of the London Jazz Composers
Orchestra), Carlos Garnett, and a feature on baritone saxophonists
including Charles Papasoff.
NEW MUSIC COMMENTS
- The Braxton/Bailey duet concert disc is one of the most eagerly
awaited entries in Emanem's ongoing reissue series. The concert was
originally released on two LP's. According to the liner notes,
"Bailey did not want to play notated compositions in unison, while
Braxton did not want to improvise totally. A compromise was
reached..."
- Pandelis Karayorgis and Eric Pakula (piano and alto sax,
respectively)'s sextet disc was released in 1995. Both men appear on
Guillermo Gregorio's hat ART disc Approximately, which is
in our top ten this week. Gregorio and Karayorgis will play a duet
concert at the Empty Bottle on April 24th.
- Drummer Michael Shrieve's new CD on CMP contains two albums'
worth of material. Half is trio recordings with Bill Frisell and
Wayne Horvitz.
- The Mocktet is a local quartet led by saxophonist, pianist, and
vocalist Laurie Lee Moses.
- Northwestern University is offering a class on Thelonious Monk
this quarter! Hopefully some students will tune in and hear Monk's
Alone in San Francisco, which we just acquired.
