GENERAL COMMENTS
- Glenn Good's interview with David S. Ware, which we broadcast on
March 18th, has been transcribed and posted on the WNUR JazzWeb at http://www.wnur.org/jazz/artists/ware.david/.
- We will return to broadcasting interviews soon. We are in a
transitional phase this quarter with Matt Aron replacing Josh Guthman
as jazz producer, and Seth Tisue replacing Jim Zanghi as jazz music
director. We plan to air interviews with Myra Melford and Dave Douglas
as part of an ongoing HatART interview series. We also hope to air
interviews with Fred Anderson, Ernest Dawkins, and Ari Brown.
NEW MUSIC COMMENTS
- The new Fred Anderson CD features one duet with drummer Hamid
Drake as well as three quartet tracks with Drake, Jim Baker, and
Harrison Bankhead. (Jim Baker is a member of several of Ken
Vandermark's groups including Caffeine and Steam; Bankhead is known
for his work with 8 Bold Souls.) The trio of Anderson, Bankhead, and
Drake played a fantastic concert last week at the Empty Bottle in
celebration both of the release of the CD and of Fred's 67th birthday.
- Reeds player Hans Koch is known to WNUR listeners from the Donat
Fisch Quartet CD that got so much airplay this spring, as well as
older recordings like a solo disc on Intakt. His new CD with Martin
Schutz and Fredy Studer, Hardcore Chambermusic features a
combination of free improvisation and plunderphonics: samples of
records popular and obscure, old and new are used throughout.
- Guitarist Steve Ramsdell has been gigging around Chicago for
some time now; his new CD is self-released and features Tim Mulvenna,
the drummer from Steam and the Vandermark Five.
- The Frank Morgan disc is a 1995 release featuring Billy Higgins.
Morgan will be in town this month at the newly reopened Jazz Showcase
(59 W. Grand).
- Larry Ochs's disc is a long composed/improvised suite performed
by a group including all of the ROVA saxophone quartet, of which Ochs
is a member, as well as Barry Guy, William Winant, Chris Brown, and
others.
- The Paul Rutherford/Paul Rogers CD is one of a new batch of
releases from Emanem (watch this space for more in coming weeks).
This disc contains previously unreleased recordings from the 1980's by
the English trombone/bass duo.
- Project W's debut CD is fine free jazz/improv in a
Parker-Guy-Lytton vein. Their label, Apraxia, also puts out albums by
the improv group Blowhole featuring trumpeter Ernst Long, a recent
transplant to Chicago.
