COMMENTS
- John Patton's Memphis to New York Spirit, in the
Blue Note Rare Groove series, contains all previously unreleased
material recorded in 1969-70, with James Blood Ulmer on guitar. Fine
stuff by this great organist.
- Guillermo Gregorio is an Argentinian saxophonist who recently
moved to the Chicago area. Approximately is his first
recording as a leader; he has recorded before as a member of Franz
Koglmann's groups. He's backed on this disc by four Boston musicians,
including pianist Pandelis Karyorgis and violinist Mat Maneri (the
latter is known to us at WNUR from several releases on Leo). It's
wonderfully thoughtful and concentrated music that moves in and out of
composed structures and free improvisation.
- "Namchylak/Rothenberg" is Sainkho Namchylak, the Tuvan woman
vocalist, and Ned Rothenberg, reeds player and member of the group New
Winds. Rothenberg will be in town to do a solo set at the Lunar
Cabaret April 6th.
- "Alexander/Halliday" is Eric Alexander and Lin Halliday playing
in the best tradition of the two-tenor duel a la Gene Ammons and Sonny
Stitt. Halliday's a veteran, still based in Chicago; Alexander's a
young player who recently relocated from Chicago to New York.
- The new Pharoah Sanders record was produced by Bill Laswell, and
it definitely has his usual funk/world beat sound, glossily
overproduced, with about ten musicians on it, most of them from
Laswell's stable. Hamid Drake plays on this, but good luck picking
him out. Pharoah makes yet another bid for commercial success instead
of doing what he does best...
- Myth-Science play all Sun Ra covers; the CD was recorded live.
