COMMENTS
- This week we'll be broadcasting portions of a recent interview
with NYC tenor saxophonist David S. Ware conducted last week by Glenn
Good. Tune in Monday, March 18, at 10 am. This interview coincides
with his Mar. 22 visit to Chicago at the Empty Bottle. This show will
feature his quartet: William Parker, bass; Matthew Shipp, piano; Whit
Dickey, drums.
- We'll also re-broadcast last week's interview with percussionist
Gerry Hemingway. This is part of a long-going series of interviews of
artists on the Swiss HatART record label. Most of the interviews we
keep mentioning will be transcribed and available for you on the Web.
Details to follow.
- Steve Grismore and Paul Scea of the Grismore/Scea Group were at
the Bop Shop this past Friday doing a live show with Chicagoans Damon
Short, Ryan Shultz, and Noel Kupersmith.
- United Nations of Messidor is a double CD
compilation of Latin music on the German label.
- The reissue of Hamiet Bluiett's Birthright, a 1977
live solo baritone sax recording, is among the first in a new reissue
series from India Navigation, a label that released many great records
out of the late 70's New York free jazz scene but has been long
dormant. Here's hoping they do lots more reissues.
- Matt Turner plays cello and piano and will be in Chicago
performing as a member of the Scott Fields Trio at the Empty Bottle on
March 20th. Infiltrator is on Fields' label, Geode.
- Gerry Hemingway gave an excellent and well attended solo
percussion concert last week at the Empty Bottle. His two new solo
CD's on Random Acoustics are so new that Hemingway himself only
received his first copies five minutes before flying to Chicago!
"Tyrolienne", off the acoustic CD, particularly wowed the Chicago
audience.
- Sonny Rollins' eagerly awaited new disc on Milestone finds him
working with in two different piano-bass-drums quartets in an acoustic
format. Jack DeJohnette, Bob Cranshaw, and others appear.
- We'll be adding more new releases next week on the Knitting
Factory, Unit, and Leo labels.
