- Consult Seth Tisue's New Music Live Web site for all cool
Chicago happenings: http://www.cs.nwu.edu/~tisue/shows.html.
Highlights:
- Tonight, 1/25/96, is the debut of the Vandermark 5 (Ken,
Kent Kessler, Hamid Drake, Mars Williams, & Jeb Bishop) at the Lunar
Cabaret. It's a double billing with the northside debut of Mars
Williams' Witches & Devils, a local band dedicated to the music of
Albert Ayler (my hero).
- JIC Jazz Fair, 1/29/96, at the Bismarck Hotel. WNUR will
be represented and selling T-shirts designed by none other than
Evanstonian cartoonist Lynda Barry.
- For you early birds & jazz poets: DJ Nicole Demetriou (Fridays,
5-7 AM) has been focusing the first hour of her show on the words, be
they vocals, spoken, or read by herself, of great old and new jazz
artists. Includes highlights from interviews, but mostly it will
focus on words within the music itself. Some artists include Gil
Scott-Heron, Ken Nordine, Last Poets, and of course the great oldies
of Ella/Louis Armstrong, as well as any chanting/ensembles/etc,
eg. Don Pullen's Sacred Common Ground. Suggestions (and materials to
borrow) are definitely welcome. Send email to Nicole directly at nicoled@merle.acns.nwu.edu.
- HatART Interview Series: This underrated Swiss label has
produced some popular music among our DJ's, so we're doing a fairly
ambitious interview project over the next few months. We'll
tentatively feature 8 artists appearing on recent HatART CD releases,
with one interview per week. Some will be live, others prerecorded
phone interviews. DJ interviewers in parentheses: Anthony Braxton
(John Corbett), Guillermo Gregorio (Corbett), Joe McPhee (Corbett),
Han Benink (Andrew Choate), Gerry Hemingway (Seth Tisue), & maybe Ray
Anderson, Myra Melford, Dave Douglas, and/or Christy Doran. At some
point, all of the interviews will be transcribed and available to all
on the WNUR Jazz Web.
