Popular Ragtime Artists and Composers
- Scott Joplin (1868-1917), christened ``King of Ragtime Writers'' by
John Stark.
- James Scott (1885-1938), whose mirrored initials did not escape Scott
Joplin.
- Joseph Lamb (1887-1960), who would have been content with fame as a
ragtime composer without being paid for his music.
Other important artists: Tom Turpin, Otis Saunders, Arthur Marshall,
Louis Chauvin, Scott Hayden, John W. ``Blind'' Boone, S. Brunson Campbell,
Artie Matthews, Robert Hampton, Charles Thompson, Eubie Blake, Luckey Roberts,
Percy Wenrich, Charles L. Johnson, George Botsford, Henry Lodge,
J. Russel Robinson.
Of course, this is not a complete list. Most of the names near the front
of the list were active in the Midwest. In fact, most of the people in the
list were active in the Midwest.
This is not a complete history. It is merely meant to whet your appetite and
inspire you to further reading about and delightful listening to the exuberant
music of ragtime.
