European Free Improvisation
In terms of the box on the style map, this style of jazz began in about 1970. While influenced by contemporary American Free Jazz, European Free Improvisation is also rooted firmly in European Classical Music, particularly twentieth-century classical music.
I couldn't write very eloquently about this music, but if you can, please get in touch with me, and we can flesh out this page some more.

Early European Jazz
Clearly, despite what the graphic implies, Jazz was alive and vibrant in Europe before 1970. Most of the action was expatriate American musicians, but it would be unfair to ignore the Europeans who were contributing to other styles of jazz.
This is a topic about which I'm not very expert at all. Anyone care to fill in this page? Write me to discuss it.
