The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians
Most commonly referred to as the AACM, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians was formally founded in Chicago in 1965 by pianist and composer Muhal Richard Abrams.
While the AACM is perhaps the best known organization in this style, a similar coalition grew in St. Louis: the Black Artists Group (BAG). Many members of these groups have collaborated, and their music and collective political consciousness are closely related.
