Some more about Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton (edit it any way you wish)

A native of the West Indies, Nanton joined the Ellington orchestra
in 1926. As a trombonist, he was a key player in the development of
Ellington's "jungle" music. He is also remembered amongst students of
Ellingtonia for his use of the plunger mute, with which he created a wide
variety of sounds. Nanton died in 1946 following a tour with the
Ellington. He was replaced by Quentin Jackson who carried on the plunger
mute tradition.
