DAVID CUNNINGHAM - "Two Different Places"
Touch Tapes "Ritual" C90 + Booklet (various artists)

Orininally recorded 1984 for Geoff Dunlops's film "Just What Is It?"
to accompany the section on Edward Allington's sculptures.
  Re-recorded in Brixton early 1985.

David Cunningham: "This is one of a number of pieces constructed
from 2 or 3 disparate elements to build a combination of sounds which
are unlikely to be in the same acoustic space through natural means.
The process comes from an appreciation of the interference from
adjacent signals on the short wave band, attempts to watch television
and listen to other sounds at the same time, and above all from the
kind of collisions evident in any performance of John Cage's music."

  Robert P Krajewski, rpk@world.std.com writes:
Cunningham can sound normal and even pretty when he wants
to (as in the collaboration with John Greaves), but _Voiceworks_ is
much dryer and self-consciously "experimental." Most of it is made of
of sampled voices or material which is largely vocal, including
baroque choral works. These are put together with the edges showing,
and some of the melodies are pretty twisted as a result. Other times,
the voices are modulated and gated (made intermittent).

Produced by David Cunningham. Recorded in the cold room, London.
  Additional recording at Acousti, Paris.

LO RECORDINGS (UK):

MOORE, THURSTON: Root CD (LO 011). "In October of 1997 independent music
label Lo Recordings received a DAT tape containing 30 different one-
minute guitar pieces by New York arthouse guitarist Thurston Moore of
Sonic Youth. Each piece was copied onto individual one-minute tapes
and then packaged in a custom designed vacuum cleaner bag. In order to
fully exploit the potential for musical/visual cross-fertilization Lo
Recordings teamed up with leading contemporary art venture Commercial
Too. One hundred bags were sent out to a selection of the most
creative visual artists and musicians, inviting them to create a brand
new work utilizing the original piece as a starting point." Co-created

"David Cunningham released his first album of experimental music,
Grey Scale, in 1976; since then he has worked as a composer and
record producer, the first notable commercial success coming in 1979
with Flying Lizard's record 'Money'. Since 1982 he has worked as a
producer of Michael Nyman's music for Peter Greenaway's films. Other
production credits include This Heat, Palais Schaumburg, David Toop,
and Steve Beresford. Angela Jaeger is a New Yorker who has sung with
Billie McKenzie, the Monochrome Set and the Bush Tetras. She has
been a member of Pigbag and Instinct. She lived in Barcelona for
many years and at last year's Sonar Festival she previewed Artifical
Homeland with David Cunningham. The music is mostly ambient
backgrounds, songscapes where the words drift in and out of focus
over a core of shimmering drones, looping tapes and percussions from
some unknown culture. There is a substantial drum and percussion
contribution from Charles Heyward of This Heat."

Notes: Missing Link version issued with bonus cut 'Summertime Dub'
which is basically the edited out second half found on the 12
inch. Photograph on cover reproduced (badly) in B/W and is
very slightly smaller. Simi-gloss 'sleeve' which is just
folded in half with a plain paper inner sleeve for the
record. Layout nearly identical, but the yellow and blue
diagonal stripes are 2.9mm wide as opposed to 3.0mm for the
original UK version. The text is the same size but sets up
differently with the diagonal stripes. The back is similarly
different, the inset is slightly smaller and the stripes are
slightly narrower, but the text is the same size. On the
back, "bonus track summertime dub" is rubber stamped in red
ink in the lower left corner, and is not listed on the record
label. The inset on the back of the sleeve has this
statement: "Licensed and manufactured in Australia by

  NOTE (milsfran@mattel.com):
I'm looking for two Japanese(?) picture discs by the Flying Lizards.
One contains and image of milk being poured across Deborah's(?) face.
The other contains an unknown image on a central paper label on the LP
which is probably twice the diameter seen on regular LP's. I believe
this was from a series of records done by Virgin of Japan.

We Do 'Em Our Way (Music for Pleasure 1980). (various artists)
John A Fotheringham notes: "This was a truely wonderful compilation
of punk cover songs, released at bargain basement prices (I found my
copy in Woolworths!). The cover was pretty crass, featuring the Mona
Lisa done up as a punk, complete with dyed hair, and a safety pin
through her nose. Other tracks featured Devo, Stranglers, the Sex
Pistols (twice) and the Slits (amongst others). Almost all tracks
were readily available (at the time)."

Dizzy Miss Lizzy (Statik Records)
catalogue number : POWT 0242
Released 1984 in Australia by PowderWorks a subsidiary of RCA.
UK (Oct 1984) cat : TAK 25
UK (Oct 1984) 12" : TAK 25-12 or TAK 25/12 (?)

01) Dizzy Miss Lizzy (Larry Williams) 2:04
02) Dizzy (D. Cunningham) 3:27
03) Gyrostatics (D. Cunningham) 10:44

voice : Sally
Piano : Julian Marshall
Drum etc : David

Darryl A Fong notes:
Powderworks are of course an aussie only company. They also distributed
the early Depeche Mode releases as well. Unfortunately there are no
other distinguishing marks on the record, i.e. I can't find any other
catalogue number or term of identification.
The song is of course that r'n'b chestnut covered by the Beatles et al.
The video was shoot entirely upside-down. e.g Dave pours a cup of tea
and the liquid flies up. (A lot of hair gel was probably used).
I have only ever seen it on 12", the cover has Sally and Dave seated,
(taken from the video).
If it was on 7", the catalogue number would be POWT 024, but don't
quote me on that, cause I think someone in the UK will provide more
info.
