WNUR is Northwestern’s student-run radio station, operating 24/7 (or so) at 7200 watts. We broadcast to Chicago’s north side and the surrounding suburbs at 89.3 FM, and our live programming is also available worldwide on our website (which you’re reading right now). You can read more about us here. We’ve got a really big year coming up, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Continue on for more information on how to get involved.

We’ll be hosting an information session on October 2 (8 PM, in Annie May Swift auditorium)—you don’t need to sign up here to attend the meeting. But if you want us to get in-touch between now and then about opportunities to get involved, here’s your chance:

Opportunities to get involved

Airplay: Airplay is WNUR’s weekly live performance showcase; every Saturday from 4 – 7 PM, the Airplay gang digs up some of the coolest local and national acts and brings them into the WNUR studios. (Here’s an example.) Airplay needs help with every step of the process, from finding and booking bands to mixing and recording them in-studio–and you don’t need any previous experience. To see more of what Airplay has to offer, check out their website.

Continental Drift: Continental Drift is WNUR’s world music show, airing weekdays 12 – 2 PM. Drift’s interests span the globe, from funky afrobeat to electronic cumbia, Balinese gamelan to Balkan brass, Moroccan gnawa music to Indian ragas, and more. Drift is looking for both DJs and apprentices–whether you’re a newbie or an expert, there’s a place for you. Here’s an example of what an episode of Drift might sound like.

Freeform: Anything goes with Freeform, WNUR’s late-night programming block (Tues – Fri: 3 AM – 5 AM; Sat: 3 AM – 7 AM; Sun: 2 AM – 6 AM). DJs have total control over the format and content of their shows, and looser FCC regulations allow for more music with cussin’. Freeform is a great opportunity for new, aspiring DJs to get comfortable hosting a show. Here’s an example of some of the weirdness you might find.

The Jazz Show: WNUR’s celebrated jazz programming (Weekdays 5 AM – 12 PM) is always in search of new jazz enthusiasts. No prior knowledge required; get up to speed by apprenticing with an experienced DJ.

NURD: Northwestern University Radio Drama is a weekly showcase of some of Northwestern’s best student radio drama, broadcasting Sundays 5:30 – 6 PM. Whether you’re interested in acting, production, or writing, NURD’s got plenty of chances to get involved.

The Rock Show: The Rock Show (Weekdays 2 PM – 9 PM) is WNUR’s beloved underground rock show, jamming the airwaves with stuff other stations aren’t cool enough to play. Here’s an example. Interested? Rock’s always looking for new apprentice DJs; by shadowing a WNUR Rock DJ and attending weekly educational meetings about the history of underground music, you’ll learn more about the music in our library than you thought was physically possible for one human brain. And after two quarters as an apprentice, you’re eligible for your own show.

Streetbeat: Streetbeat (Weekdays 10 PM – 3 AM next day) is where you’ll hear some of the hottest DJs in Chicago playing the tracks you won’t hear anywhere else on the dial. With offerings ranging from house to hip-hop to dubstep and beyond, Streetbeat’s a five-hour dance party every night. Newbies are encouraged to apprentice and learn their craft from one of the Streetbeat masters, while more experienced DJs are welcome to apply for their own show. And with WNUR’s high-quality mixing equipment, even the newest DJ can sound like a professional.

WNUR News: In addition to multiple daily newscasts, WNUR News produces the weekly Your World with WNUR News, which you can check out here. They’ve got opportunities for involvement at every level, so those interested in radio news are encouraged to check it out.
