If there exists a proper way to wrap up one’s summer and slowly descend into winter hibernation, it would probably involve Bloomington’s Lotus World Music and Arts Festival. Not to mark everything off of Chicago, but a few-hours’ trip will take you to the paradise, the Mecca even, of a global music village hosted in the very heart of Bloomington, Indiana.

Where else can you see Arga Bileg from Mongolia perform alongside Cuba’s Roberto Fonseca? How about DakhaBrakha with their Ukrainian ethno taking over from Kardemimmit’s gorgeous Finish kantele tunes? Amjad Ali Khan of India, Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba from Mali, Sonia M’Barek representing Tunis, and many more will take the stages of some ten venues between Wednesday and Sunday, September 25-29th.

All of this phenomenal music will go hand in hand with art exhibitions, show cases, outdoors performances, only to be highlighted by a Saturday morning parade and a Sunday afternoon World Spirit Concert.

Of course, WNUR will not miss out this opportunity to chat with a few of our favorites. Expect plenty of festival coverage throughout the weekend (our Twitter and Facebook pages are the places to go for this) and artist interviews shortly thereafter. In the days leading up to September 25th, we will feature the artists from the lineup on Continental Drift and some of your other favorite WNUR shows, but in the meantime, check out

Mystic Bowie, former lead singer for Tom Tom Club and now a reggae dancehall solo artist, is making an appearance on the WNUR airwaves! On Friday, July 26th, from 2-4 PM CT, he’ll be joining the Rock Show to play music that has influenced his musical career. Tune in!

Upcoming Tour Dates:
7/25 – Des Plains Theatre
7/26 – Reggie’s Rock Club
7/27 – Hard Rock Cafe

From Monday, June 17 until Sunday, June 23 we are holding our very first WNUR Donor Challenge!

This is a chance for you to support WNUR’s unique, community-oriented programming. In a radio landscape dominated stations whose programming comes originates from hundreds of miles away, WNUR remains stubbornly committed to Chicagoland. Our hosts and DJs live locally and broadcast in-person from our Evanston studios. This shows in our commitment to local music, both past and present, as well as the local focus of our news, talk, and sports programming.

Your gift is used to purchase equipment for our shows. WNUR is non-commercial and non-profit, receiving its operating budget from listener support. These donations go to a number of purposes, from recording equipment for our live in-studio music show Airplay to the mixing equipment that allows our Streetbeat DJs to spin live on-air. It also covers basic equipment that helps bring you award-winning shows like WNUR News and This is Hell!

To make things even better, a generous WNUR alumnus has issued a challenge. If we receive 200 donations this week, they will contribute an additional $2000 to help bring you Chicago’s best and most unique radio content.

Please make your gift online at or by calling (800) 222-5603.
