Activities
Ideas
Many concepts have been floated to
keep the WNUR Alumni Organization busy, from service
programs to social activities. Below are two thoughts
submitted by Steve Rudolph.
Two important areas for
consideration not covered in the Constitution
are
-
Specific fundraising activities,
and
-
How to appropriate the money
raised.
In addition to requiring funds for
some of our activities and consideration of our
commitment to the WNUR Renaissance Endowment effort, I
think we should fund a certain number of awards for
students working in various areas within WNUR. Here are
a couple examples:
"Willis L. Butler Leadership
Prize" - I propose that the Board establish the
Butler Prize, to be awarded annually at the School of
Speech Honors Convocation. This award, in memory of
WNUR's first general manager, would be presented to the
WNUR student staff member who best captures Bill's
spirit by demonstrating mature leadership and people
skills. I envision the Butler Prize--at least
initially--as a plaque and small cash stipend. With
adequate support, it might someday become something
more, such as a scholarship. I recommend that funding
for the Butler prize be solicited from all WNUR alumni,
but that 1950's alumni be targeted in particular.
Perhaps members of the Butler family also could be of
assistance.
"Steve Creagh Excellence in
Sports Prize" - I'd also like to propose a similar
prize to be awarded annually to a member of the WNUR
Sports Department to honor the memory of Steve Creagh,
1976 (?) WNUR sports director who succumbed to cancer
only a couple short years after his graduation. The WNUR
sports staffs of the 1970's have produced some top
professionals in the field, and I think some of them
might see the Creagh Prize as an appropriate gesture to
honor Steve's memory and help continue the strong
tradition of excellence in sports coverage at WNUR.
Steve's father recently passed away, but he still has a
large family in the area who might be able to help us.
What activities should we plan?
